Personal Challenge

Since I will NEVER run the December or any other half-marathon, I am fundraising during my trek instead in late September when I will be trekking for 2 weeks to Ama Dablam base camp at 14,500 feet, near Mount Everest in order to raise money for the Angkor Hospital for Children in Siem Reap, Cambodia. I've visited their hospital several times over the years and it has a special place in my heart. It's a small hospital, not fancy but they work wonders with not very much and greatly benefit the lives of many impoverished Cambodian children. Please dig deep and contribute towards this worthwhile cause.

My Story

I've been training for well over a year to get fit enough to attempt this 14 day trek to Ama Dablam and back. Ama Dablam is a beautiful mountain and its base camp at 14,500 feet is a fitting place to look across at the splendour of the Himalayas. Please contribute towards my fundraising efforts for the Angkor Hospital For Children. http://angkorhospital.org/about-us/

I have visited the AHC several times and seen their good work with their outreach program for children with HIV, I have seen their daily clinic with literally hundreds of poorly children being treated regardless of their social status or ability to pay. I'm a cynic at heart and this is one of the few charities I think is worthwhile - there are few international staff there, it is primarily local doctors and nurses and no one is making huge salaries. It is a long time since the genocide of the Kymer Rouge regime but the shadow of that murderous time still falls - land mines, unexploded ordinance and the loss of social strata including the elimination of doctors has meant that Cambodia has been playing catch up in terms of the provision of basic health care for its youngest citizens.

We - and you - are very lucky to be able take our children to a doctor, immunise them, get them check ups as we need to - we don't even think about it. In Siem Reap (and Cambodia) however, where the majority of people live on less than US$3 a day the ability to see a doctor is a luxury few can afford. Parents often need to borrow or sell possessions just to get transport to the hospital to see a doctor. Your contribution however small, will make a material difference. Please make a contribution and know you are really helping!!!
