Team #WASH - comprising UNICEF WASH Section staff and their family and friends - is aiming to run a combined 210km in this year's #HerosForChildrenRun2016! Evidence shows that access to clean water, improved sanitation and proper hygiene are essential during a child's First 1000 days and beyond - contributing to improving children’s health, preventing malnutrition and improving their ability to do well in school. Access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) also helps to reduce gender-based burdens and promotes protection and dignity for women and girls. The Philippines has made great progress in increasing access to safe water - but sanitation remains a challenge: over 7 million Filipinos still do not have access to any toilet facilities at all and have to practice open defecation! UNICEF works with local government authorities in the poorest and most vulnerable rural communities. We use community-based approaches to increase understanding on the links between inadequate sanitation and hygiene practices and poor health and nutrition, and to trigger their desire to stop open defecation. These triggering tools also promote other positive behaviors, such as hand washing with soap, improved household water treatment, and proper solid waste management. Support is provided to help communities plan what needs to be done so that everyone can live in a clean, healthy environment, and progress is monitored and celebrated to ensure that everyone stays motivated and continues to work towards sustainable sanitation for all! Team #WASH is running to celebrate the positive impact we see in the communities that UNICEF has supported to date, and to raise awareness about the ongoing #WASH challenges still to be addressed in the Philippines! With these funds, we can train local leaders and health workers in one community and support them to achieve their zero open defecation goal!
