My Story
A malnourished Yankee walked (clawed his way) out, and he was scared out of his mind. His claws would be almost digging through the floor to get away from the center volunteers, bloodily scratching everyone in the process, with such fearful eyes that were glassy and simply couldn't focus on a single thing for more than a second. The volunteers said they hadn't seen such a fearful dog in a while and worried if Yankee would ever get adopted. "I'll take him", I said.
I fostered him for over 6 months before Yankee slowly turned into a gentle, loyal, sensitive and (selectively) playful dog. He still never gets mad at any hoomen nor dogs, and stays absolutely loyal to his best friends and girlfriend Nala. But for over a year, training Yankee was the most difficult and emotional draining, sleep-deprived experience I've ever had, and many friends have seen me break down too many times.
Throughout the process, LAP volunteers would come over to Wan Chai to help train Yankee, reimburse me for some training courses I pay at my expense and subsidising kibbles when Yankee had to keep switching food due to his sensitive stomach (I've gone through over 20 brands) etc. LAP is an organization that relies completely on individual volunteers' initiation and donations, and therefore frequently in need of help and donation. They're also one of the few no-kill shelters in town and thus have many dogs that stayed at LAP for many years. The best way to help LAP really is to volunteer your time, but any donation would be a good cause and massive help to them. They've rescued Yankee from trauma and will continue to do so to more dogs to come, and I sincerely hope to continuously help them as much as I can.
