Help Children with Disabilities to Attain Their Rights to Education

Children with disability remain a challenge in the child welfare context in Indonesia. Yayasan Sayangi Tunas Cilik partner of Save the Children has reached 3,433 children with disabilities accessing at least one social, health, or rehabilitation services. Among them, 728 children can access schools and 1,304 children have showed significant changes in physical, cognitive, social, and emotional aspects.

Poor economic situation multiplies social barriers for children with disabilities. Official government data reported that 33% of children with disabilities live in families earning less than USD 2 a day (70% boys, 30% girls). They are more likely to experience poor health, yet they have limited access to adequate nutrition, clean water, and health services. In addition, misconceptions around disabilities often lead to discrimination and exclusion of people with disabilities in the society. In particular, Indonesia Ministry of Education recently estimated that 70% of school-aged children with disabilities are not participating in formal education.

Our program, IDEAL (Inclusive Community Development and School for All), helps children with disabilities to attain their right to education and protection by developing minimum standards on inclusive education for West Java Province and establishing Community-Based Child Protection (CBCP) system for prevention and response to violence against children.

The project works directly with children, youth, people with disabilities, and Disabled People Organization (DPO) to ensure their participation in the project’s design and implementation, including raising awareness and reducing stigma and discrimination towards children with disabilities.
