The pandemic has affected how marginalised women and girls experience menstruation. Economic disruption has caused thousands of families to resort to raising white flags and queuing for essential items from food banks across the country. However there is another essential item often forgotten during this time: Menstrual supplies.
Women and girls living in poverty, especially those excluded from government assistance programmes, already face barriers to obtaining menstrual hygiene supplies. With movement restrictions and rising economic uncertainties, women are
forced to prioritise food over their personal care. We need to make menstrual hygiene a priority for the health, dignity and welfare of all who are menstruating.
The LaunchPad Project is a community project led by Taylor’s Hostel Management for Taylor’s University and College students living on-campus to end period poverty among female refugees. Since 2019, over a hundred students have been volunteering to produce and donate over 1,000 reusable menstrual pads, and transferring knowledge on DIY pad-making and menstrual hygiene through free workshops for marginalised women and girls.
This year, we are pledging to produce and donate 500 more reusable pads to assist 250 women but we know it is not enough. With your help, we can produce
1,000 more pads to assist over 500 women! Since they are reusable, recipients will have continuous access to pads for at least 2 years.
Each recipient will receive
2 reusable pads and
a picture tutorial in 7 languages
(English, Bahasa Malaysia, Burmese, Arabic, Persian, Somali, Urdu) on how to sew a reusable pad using easy-to-find materials found at home, like an old T-shirt.
Every RM8 raised will enable us to produce 1 reusable pad plus provide income opportunities for refugee-women tailors: RM3 will be spent on purchasing fabric to sew the pad, and RM5 will be paid to a skilled refugee tailor who will sew the pads. We aim to provide income opportunities to over 5 refugee-women tailors.
Pads produced will be donated to selected non-profit organisations in Malaysia with an aid distribution network.
Every Ringgit counts. We appreciate any amount of donation you can spare. All you need is a debit card (your ATM card) or a credit card. You can also get in touch with us if you would like to do a direct transfer to our bank account.
If you’re not in a position to donate at this time,
please share our campaign with your family, friends and colleagues.
