As a Malaysian Chinese, what I can do to know more about the society we live in is to fundraise for a Muslim NGO (MyCARE). Support my artwork by chipping in your love!
My Story
Hello everyone, my name is Sin Ling and I'm currently working on my dissertation to graduate. During the recent semester break, I joined a volunteer program of Humanitarian Care Malaysia (MyCARE) where I was given the opportunity to visit places I never been to, such as Orang Asli Village and urban PPR, to distribute food supply to the people living there. I was struck by the living condition of urban poverty, and there, I met Rohanna.
Rohanna works as a cleaner of the PPR she lives in. She's aged, constantly smiling, and living with her 40 years old son who diagnosed with Down's Syndrome. Her husband had passed away two decades ago, since then she is struggling to become the only breadwinner of the family. By earning RM900 per month, she is optimistic even though the situation for her is challenging. I was touched because of her unconditional love for her son. and her faith in God.
As a typical Malaysian Chinese who grew up in a Chinese community, I barely communicate with Malay and Indian friends around me as I had little confidence to speak to them. Therefore, I missed the chances of cross-cultural communication and realized I was in the comfort zone. I didn't know the trend ongoing apart from the Chinese community and often overlooked the social fact. I keen to know and understand the culture and beliefs of different ethnic groups, and bought myself several books regarding Islamic teaching, the History of Islam and the origins of Indian culture, as well as an ethnographic study on indigenous groups in Malaysia.
I know I can step out of my comfort zone by doing more.
Since the volunteer program, I drew the story of Rohanna and I know I can do something more than this. MyCARE is a renowned NGO among Muslims and I hope I can fundraise for them. Humanitarian work is hard but meaningful.
If you like the idea of Stepping Out of Comfort Zone, do help me to fundraise for MyCARE!
Your contribution is highly appreciated.
