Hello everyone! My name is Sarah Tan, a 19 year-old Malaysian and I am currently interning at eHomemakers (an NPO in which Project WHEE! is under). A little background story, the main aim of Project WHEE! is to help the women in Bario, Sarawak, earn income through eco-tourism. Volunteers from the youth cultural exchange will be assigned to 1-2 of the women to teach English informally for 3 weeks. In other words, they'll be teaching English as they shadow and help along their daily activities. Why English? Because Bario is slowly attracting foreign tourists and their main language of communication is English. By doing this, we hope that it will help boost Bario's eco-tourism and lift poverty. (Bario is located in the northeast of Sarawak, 3280 feel above sea level) I find a need to invest my time and energy in this because we are in the process of reviving and improving a traditional culture here (The Kelabits) that makes Malaysia such a multiracial and diverse country.
