My Story

Story of a boy and a dragon

And there he was. A skinny, smaller than average nine year old boy. Standing face up against a formidable, mythical dragon.  Legend has it the dragon was as temperamental as the humid tropical weather; bright and warm at times, cold and wet the next.

Join us on little Jimmy’s record-making climbing journey. Come 21st April 2018 at the age of 9yrs 5 months 29days, he will be the youngest climber to have climbed Malaysia’s highest granite wall, The legendary Dragons Horns (702m), located at Tioman Island, Pahang, Malaysia.

Interestingly, the current record for the youngest climber in the world reportedly belongs to Stella Noble of USA who at the age of 9yrs 11months 29days climbed Colorado’s Long Peak, Casual Route 5.10c, climbing a vertical height of 383m.

While Jimmy may be climbing a vertical height of 250m via the route Freebird (TD, 6A), lesser than Stella’s vertical climbing height, by record, he is 6 months younger comparatively.

Our research also points to Jimmy being possibly the youngest person in the world to be performing a multi-point abseiling from the longest distance of 270m! A possible world record in the making!

Support our cause
Approximately 84% of Malaysian children experience some form of bullying before they turn 18, with psychological effects reaching as far as adulthood. Some of those who do manage to escape it either do so by fighting back, entering gangs for protection, or becoming bullies themselves, because hurt people hurt people. We want to break this cycle.

Being a kid of his age, Jimmy learns that the best way to bringing across the message on standing up together against bullying is by he himself creating an effective and convincing enough platform to raise awareness against bullying. Partnering with UNICEF seems to be the best medium in spreading this message across the world, ensuring enough support is gained to make considerable changes in breaking the vicious cycle of bullying.

Not only Jimmy will be attempting to make two records for the book of records; his record climbing feat will also be one of the most effective mediums to raise funds for this cause against bullying - a small boy standing tall against the Dragon, suppressing his fears and firmly believing in the greatness within himself for greater causes and outcomes.

About Jimmy
Jimmy started climbing since he was six and has received formal and professional climbing coaching before being selected to the Malaysian National Climbing team in 2017, being the youngest climbing National athlete in the country. With close to three years climbing indoor and outdoor and entering a few national level climbing competitions, Jimmy is definitely psyched and looking forward to this record-making climb!

About Dragons Horns
Dragons Horns or locally known as Gunung Nenek Simukut is arguably one of the world’s best kept climbing secrets, hidden in the tropical islands of Tioman, Malaysia.

Standing majestically 702metres above the sea level is a unique twin granite wall, reportedly to be the tallest in Malaysia or even South East Asia.
With its solid and clean granite features and its incredibly epic-long vertical climbing routes under treacherous unpredictable weather lying within the monsoon belt, both the summits are inaccessible neither by hiking, trailing nor trekking, except via rock climbing.

The first recorded attempt on the majestic horn was made in 1996 by Scotty Nelson and Nick Tomlin. Over the span of four years with numerous attempts, the duo finally made it to the summit of the notorious wall after spending eight days on the island during late August 2000.

Quoting Scotty Nelson, "..this is probably one of the longest rock climbs in South East Asia and one of the only big walls. Care should be taken by prospective future ascentionists". They climbed the prominent 400m south face that require four nights on the wall sleeping in a portaledge (hanging tent).

David Kaszlikowski of Poland who established two of the routes there; Polish Princess (7b+) and Sam Sam (7b), was quoted as saying “..it is probably the only place in the world where you can explore a beautiful coral reef and climb a 300m granite wall on the same day”.

Only a handful of local climbers have reached the top with mostly international climbers having made their way to the summit, although there have been reported cases where eventhough some of them are strong and fit climbers, the heat and humidity of the thick tropical jungle approach was really zapping their fitness causing them to fall and faint due to excessive heat.

Entering the Dragons is definitely not for the faint hearted.

About the team
From multiple climbing competition winner to an international chef with a deep passion for climbing to a national climbing athlete to a tie-wearing corporate hedonist, Jimmy’s record climb will be backed by four methodical, experienced and surefooted purist climbers.

Competitive climber with multitudes of climbing expertise, Izzu Husin is an acclaimed purist climber who is very structured and analytical in all his climbing adventures. A graduate in psychology, he surprises people by describing climbing betas in verbatim through his incredible elephant memory!

Izzat Shokor is a National climbing athlete who has been actively involved in both local and regional competitions. Strong and athletic, he is now currently training for the upcoming Asian Games.

An international chef by profession and a climber by passion, adventure seeker Faisal Duke aims to visit as many countries as possible, with climbing crags as his must-visits for sure. A videographer by talent, he will be the one responsible for photos and filmography for this Dragons Horns adventure (and the cookings for the team of course!)

Shah Tahir is a professional banker who last actively internationally climbed almost two decades ago and now just wants to be a happy man who can spend quality time with his kids and pursuing his life passions.
