We asked Siti, a 7-year-old student as we hand over her brand new pair of black shoes, the design chosen by herself. Siti was one of 205 happy recipients of Black To School campaign in 2018, when it was first launched. She smiled broadly with her cutely crooked teeth, and nodding enthusiastically without saying a word. This year, we hope to see Siti again.
As we approach the 2020 school year, and families are preparing their kids with necessary school supplies, our communities of urban and rural poor families find it difficult to buy new school gear. These families are Malaysians who earn less than RM1,500 per month, and they struggle to provide the basic necessities for the kids to attend school.
In 2018, our Minister of Education announced that all government schools will be implementing a black school shoes policy in stages starting January 2019. Although black shoes will not be compulsory in all schools until 2021, Nourish believes that we can give these kids a good head start and get them excited and enthusiastic about dressing up for school in new black shoes.
Last year, our happy recipients were:
Everything we raise during this campaign will go towards buying good quality black shoes, socks and to cater for the logistics of bringing the children to the shoe stores. The more we are able to raise, the more black shoes we can provide to a wider group. At the time of writing, we have about 350 needy schoolchildren in our database. Therefore, we hope you can be as generous as possible.
