With only 16% of refugee children enrolled in secondary education in centers like Fugee School and less than 1% in universities, the General Education Diploma (GED) course prepares refugee youth in Malaysia for higher education, especially after resettlement.
The GED course is an upper-secondary certificate equivalent to A-level accepted by nearly all universities in the U.S. and many across the world. In collaboration with Axiom Learning Centre, GED is a viable alternative for students who are 18 years old and over to certify their completion of secondary education and facilitate their access to university.
For many refugee students, access to education is a huge hurdle, due to their legal status as refugees, no support system, opportunities and financial aid. Many refugee youth do not end up going to college, instead many drop out and female youth get married. At Fugee School, we work to pave pathways of opportunity for all refugees, providing career guidance and a strong support system.
How Long Does the GED Exam Take?
The GED exam consists of four subjects - Social Studies, Science, Math, Language Arts tests which can be taken at once or spread the individual tests across multiple visits to a testing center.
Due to the pandemic in 2020/2021, Fugee School's GED 20/21 cohort could not proceed with their exams.
We are in urgent need to fundraise RM15,000 for our GED 20/21 cohort (8 students x 4 subjects each) who will take their examination scheduled in May 2022.
