This effort is organised by the Student Council of IUMW to raise funds in hopes of positively contributing towards the environment while simultaneously sparking urgency against climate change. IUMW Sustainable: The Green Action are donating to The Global Environment Centre (GEC) in hopes of aiding monetary donations for their programmes and initiatives that strive to protect our environment.
My Story
We’ve got 6 years left before the adverse consequences of climate change become irreversible. Nevertheless, don’t give up! We still have time to ensure a better future and change its course.
From the words of a renowned environmental activist Greta Thunberg, "I have learned you are never too small to make a difference."
With your thoughtful donations to IUMW Sustainable: The Green Action, a fundraising campaign for Global Environment Centre, you will be doing your part in slowing down climate change.
The Green Action is channeled directly to the GEC General Fund. Hence, your attentive donations will go to any environmental campaigns such as River Care, Forest & Coastal, Peatland and Outreach programmes that will benefit from your monetary donations.
The Adversity of Climate Change
Weather will become more extreme
Heatwaves , floods, droughts, and wildfires and all becoming more frequent (IPCC Report, 2020).
29% of the world population will experience some level of flood in their lifetime (Rentschler & Salhab, November 2020).
With a 2°C increase, extreme hot days in the mid-latitudes will be about 4°C hotter (7.2°F) than pre-industrial levels.
U.N. report projected that about 14% of the world’s population would be exposed to extreme heat waves once every five years if global temperature increases are held to 1.5°C. That percentage would jump up to 37% with a rise of 2°C.
With a 1.5°C increase, sea levels are projected to rise by 2100 by 0.26 to 0.77 meters (0.85-2.52 feet) relative to 1986-2005.
With a 2°C increase, sea levels are projected to rise by 2100 by 0.36 to 0.87 meters (1.18-2.85 feet) relative to 1986-2005.
With a 1.5°C increase, 6% of insects, 8% of plants, and 4% of vertebrates are projected by 2100 to lose more than half of their climatically determined geographic range.
- With a 2°C increase, those percentages double or triple: 18% of insects, 16% of plants, and 8% of vertebrates are projected by 2100 to lose more than half of their climatically determined geographic range. (Lieberman, 2021)
Why do we need your support?
Imagine yourself walking through an empty forest, where there are no animals in sight and nowhere to shade against the scorching sun. We have to act now before it’s too late, “ Hope is not lost, we need to act faster” (Hanes, 2021).
We can still avert the worst impacts of climate change if we act today, If we can drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions in the next decade and reach net zero emissions globally by 2050.
We still have a chance to meet the 1.5 celsius target!!
Our Upcoming Forum
The IUMW Student Council is hosting a forum called IUMW Sustainable: Green Over Smokescreen on September 21, 2021. This effort intends to raise awareness of the current state of climate change, as well as the Malaysian government's environmental policies and how citizens may assist to battle climate change.
We hope we will inspire you in all we do! For more information head on over to our Instagram page (@iumwsc) for action packed posts/reels.
