Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Children in Baganuur, Mongolia

As part of World Vision Malaysia's Together for Every Child Campaign, I have taken up the Water for Life Challenge. I will carry a bottle filled with dirty water everywhere I go for a month and raise funds for clean water projects around the world. Please support my effort! Every little bit counts.

My Story

On 1 May 2015, a group of us embarked on The Road Less Traveled. As World Vision Staff, we led a group of child sponsors to Mongolia. One of the districts we visited was Baganuur, a very new Area Development Programme funded by World Vision Malaysia. As this is only the first year of implementation, the needs are great. We were brought to a ger kindergarten and the principal we interviewed told us that it is her wish for the children to have access to proper toilet and sanitation facilities. At present, children have to walk out of the ger to use the pit latrine (basically this is just a hole in the ground). There have been cases of children falling into the pit. During winter, when temperature can drop to -40°C, it is just extremely cold for the children to go out and ease themselves. This is reflective of the general situation amongst the kindergartens and schools in Baganuur.

As a team, we are committing to raise RM150,000 that will provide clean water, proper sanitation and promote good hygiene practices. The funds will directly benefit more than 2,600 children and families in 5 kindergartens and 4 secondary schools through the following initiatives:-
  • Installation of at least 3 water storage tanks
  • Construction of 16 bio toilet units (with bio decomposers) and 1 public bath house / toilet
  • Distribution of handouts on hygiene and sanitation practices
  • Building 16 washing facilities
  • Sanitation and hygiene campaign training sessions
