My Story
Why UNICEF Philippines?
Over the years, I’ve heard about the challenges of growing up in the Philippines - whether directly from my parents or in the news. The lengths children need to -and will go to- access education is inspirational, because it's their best chance at a better life. When my mother was a child, she'd walk 8km a day to get to school and back in San Joaqin, Iloilos.
Some stats from UNICEF’s 2023 Philippines Annual Report:
- Child poverty rate: 26.4%, with many living on less than £1.50 to £2.50 per day
- Only 10% of Grade 5 learners meet minimum reading proficiency. Imagine if only 1 in 10 kids from a UK classroom could read to the expected standard.
- Less than 50% of children have access to safely-managed water. 100% of children in the UK and Australia have access to safe water.
