My Story

[20th Oct 2015] Sir Soon successfully hit and even surpassed his funding target with a total of RM5,050, how amazing is that! Currently, he's working with another party to create a bigger STAR room but wanted to take this moment to share with you all the wonderful updates for the project so far. Materials and facilities for STAR room is still in process yet he already brought his students for a memorable trip to the Pearl of Orient, Penang.

You can check out his photo updates at https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1629940340619560.1073741837.1497641163849479&type=3

I’m a TFM 2015 fellow, currently teaching Form 1 to Form 4 students English at a public school in Malaysia. Sadly, I discovered the students here seem to be highly unmotivated to learn in English. One of the biggest reason being there is no conducive, safe and properly equipped classroom for them to learn and practice their language skills (as images attached). Broken whiteboards, broken tables & chairs and missing doors...putting myself in their position, I will be equally unmotivated to learn anything from the teachers.

My Initiative - Star Project
To curate a  21st century learning environment for the school's students.
  • English Learning Space with expected monthly usage of 540 students.
  • English Learning Trip to Pulau Pinang with 40 students and 4 teachers.
  • There will be over 500 books being stored in the English Learning Space.
  • 3 teachers will be working closely with 20 other English Student Ambassadors.
Cost Breakdown
  • Internet for a year (RM 150/month) = RM1,800
  • Internet router = RM200
  • Basic English reading books for the students of the community (Ladybird Key Words with Peter and Jane, comic books, story books) = RM800
  • Book shelves = RM400
  • 3 Whiteboards  = RM600
  • Learning trip to the Penang Island (War Museum, Aquarium Penang, George Town Heritage City) Subsidy for Accommodation = RM1,200
